Why sending the same resume to every job is a mistake

We sometimes view the job search as a "lottery": "The more places I send my resume, the higher my chances". So, we send the exact same resume file to 50 different addresses a day. And the result? Sometimes weeks go by with no response.

The reason for this is that HR professionals can spot a "generic" or "spam" resume in the very first second. Every job posting addresses a different problem and the company is looking for someone specific to solve that exact problem. So, how can you specifically tailor your resume for each vacancy?

Instead of "copy-paste", “think and tailor”

1. Read the job description like a detective

Read the text of the open vacancy carefully. Which words are repeated the most? What is the company's most important requirement? If the posting emphasizes "Analytical thinking, Python skills and teamwork" these exact keywords must be at the forefront of your resume.

2. Edit your "Summary" section

The very top of your resume should hit the target directly. If you are applying to a bank, emphasize your financial accuracy in the summary section. If you are applying to a tech startup with the same resume, change the summary to highlight your inclination toward innovation and speed.

3. Change the order and focus of your experiences

For example, let's say you have experience in both "sales" and "event organization".

If the job you are applying for is sales-oriented, highlight the sales figures and revenue growth from your previous job (place them at the very top of your bullet points).

However, if the vacancy is for PR or event organization, bring forward the campaigns you organized and the events you managed at that same job.

4. The correct file name

When sending the same resume for different roles, don't forget to change the file name. Sending a file named Firstname_Lastname_Marketing_Resume.pdf for an "Accountant" vacancy will be the ultimate proof of your carelessness.
